Introduction

The joy of being a nanny is that I know at the end of the day I have helped form someone's child into a better human being. I quite enjoy seeing my charges, getting to know them and learning from their parents what I missed just as they enjoy hearing about how our day went together when they return home for the evening.

What I don't understand is the unsaid words that lie between parents and caregivers. The dishonesty, the short-changing. Why so many people are alright with giving the person who should be most important to them, their child, the short end of the stick in many cases.

Why is it that it is socially acceptable for parents to short-change the nanny and splurge on a fancy BMW for MomBoss, or a brand new Escalade for DadBoss? Why would anyone choose material possessions of ANY sort over their progeny. Their offspring, the fruit of their loins. I can only assume the problem lies in the fact that we treat populating the world with offspring as a chore, and nothing else.

As someone who has always wanted children, it seems hard to imagine not caring about who my child spends their time with. It seems hard to pretend in my mind I would rather have an extremely overpriced, expensive to maintain and fill with gas vehicle over paying my nanny an extra $150 a month to ensure she can properly provide for herself and be sure to be with my family for a long time!

Considering what we know about children and development, it seems completely ridiculous that parents would be so ignorant as to the importance of the family nanny. I say this from the prospective of the nanny, and from the prospective of a person who works alongside other nannies and their families to ensure there is a proper balance and work environment for all.
